Ice land is mostly green and grassy, while greenland is mainly icy and cold...Actually, Greenland is up 85% ice caps and glaciers. Even though it make sense, there's no truth to the rumor that they switched names...
And while Greenland was so named to encourage settlers, it's doubtful that iceland was named to discourage settlers...
